Free Energy Device Studio head engineer/producer Richard Belkner (affectionately known as “Richie B”) has twenty years of experience producing and engineering records with leading Australian and international artists across all musical genres. His unrivalled ability to expertly combine analog and digital recording techniques and his quest to capture each musician’s sound and soul with unique clarity make recording with Belkner at the beautiful Free Energy Device Studio a joyful experience.
Belkner’s long list of Australian and international clients include Ian Moss (Cold Chisel), rising star Tkay Maidza, soul artist Ngaiire, singer Sarah Blasko, multi-ARIA Award-winning producer Paul McKercher (Eskimo Joe, You Am I, Josh Pyke), Jack Ladder and lots more. As of 2017, Belkner has acquired a custom-designed Zahl AM1 mixing console, the only one of its kind outside Europe.
How the story begins
After leaving his native Tasmania to study at the Adelaide Conservatorium of Music, Belkner commenced his recording career at some of Australia’s finest studios including BJB, Megaphon and Electric Avenue. Belkner then trained with legendary engineer and recording artist Billy Field at the iconic Paradise Studios, where bands including Air Supply, INXS, Icehouse, The Angels and Paul Kelly created some of Australia’s most memorable albums and Belkner refined his audio manipulation, recording and mixing techniques.
When Field made a move to the Central Coast, Belkner set up his own space, a terrace house in Chippendale. During his tenure here, Belkner produced and engineered a slew of records whilst assembling an enviable arsenal of outboard gear, digital weaponry and vintage instruments. In his final year in the space he recorded a massive 35 albums. At this point, it was time to commence work on his dream space. In 2007, Free Energy Device Studio was born. Explore the studio.
